  • Education may or may not have relation to CAREER; a branch of Engineering is often opted based on potential pay-package. Despite placement support, all degree holders can’t get jobs in industry.

  • Employability of Individual and the demand-supply also matters.

  • Willingly or unwillingly many opt post-graduation, MBA, join BPO, as teacher, clerk or even apply for peon.

  • First JOB is problem for many freshers, but some frequently change jobs, which is not a good sign.

  • Jobs are at risk even for people with long experience, when companies like Kodak, Xerox, Nokia, Kingfisher down shutters, during economic slowdown or pandemics like Covid-19.

  • Job situation may worsen with technologies like AI, ML, IoT etc. but alternate avenues will emerge and one has to be prepared for all situations.

What is ENGINEERING

Engineering originated with early civilization. Vishwakarma is the God of all technicians. Weapons for war, chariots, airplanes, palaces, temples, extraction of metals, musical instruments and ancient jewelry etc. are engineering marvels created by the craftsmen called – mason, mechanic, carpenter, blacksmith, goldsmith etc.

Modern Concept & Branches

Formal education for Civil Engineering started in France around 1750-1800 AD. This was followed by Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical streams in England. List got enlarged with new streams like Textiles, Mining, Metallurgy, Aeronautical, Architecture, Agriculture, Computer Science and IT, Electronics, Telecom, Petroleum, Plastics, Environment and disciplines like Space, Biotechnology, Mechatronics, Automation, Genetic Engineering etc. (List is not complete)

4 - Levels of Tech-Education

  • Skill training of 2 – 6 months duration in any technical activity;

  • Certificate courses from the Industrial Training Institutes (ITI)

  • Diploma of 3-years from Polytechnic or a Community College;

  • Under Graduate courses of 4-years called B E, B Tech or BS;

 

Success in career is neither linked to degree, diploma or Institution. It depends on sharpness of observation, imagination, analytical ability and competence to solve problems that one may have without formal education also.

Engineering is UNIVERSAL

Engineering is creative art and a thought process. If mission of medical profession is to ‘To Protect Health’, the mission of engineering is ‘To Create Wealth’. Designing plant, machinery, product, process or Apps are no less than writing poetry or creating a piece of art on canvass. 

 

Engineering is indispensable for economic growth, comforts of life, protection of environment and for each domain of human activity, may it be agriculture, industry or services. Applications of Engineering are there in –

  • Food and Agriculture                                                       Mines, Minerals, Materials and Manufacturing

  • Transport on land, water, in air or space                     Infrastructure (roads, bridges, ports etc.) and housing,

  • Hygiene, Healthcare and Hospitals,                              Chemicals, Fertilizers and Pharmaceutical Industry

  • Paper, Plastics, Petrochemicals, Power,                       Energy and Environment

  • Communication and Information Technology,           Smart Cities and Smart Factories etc.
