MSME, Alternate Options, Social Enterprenship

1.  MSME
  • Number of MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) units run into millions as against few thousands of large industries.

  • Though managed by individual owners, these have large potential for jobs, but the limitations are –    (a) they lack formal organisation structure, (b) a professional to guide freshers for formal induction & orientation training and (c) expect immediate output.

  • There is way out to make inroads into such small or medium industry. Locate a unit close to the college, plan visits, develop friendship and seek support for learning in groups of 2 or 3 friends.

  • Spend breaks and major holidays with the unit. Understand working, learn about plant, product, process and technology by internet search and by seeking help of supervisory personnel.

  • Record observations and share periodically with the owner about progress. It’s confidence building about sincerity and ability to learn. After sometime, the trainees can come out with suggestions regarding Productivity, Energy use, Emissions, Waste reduction etc.

  • By the time the group is in the final year, its in a position to recommend suggestions in the form of report, covering capacity enhancement, product diversification, etc. It’s real learning by PROJECT approach, wherein the faculty may also take interest.

  • It’s also self marketing by capability demostration, and not by resume. The owner of industry may be tempted to associate some the trainees with respectable remuneration. Else, this contributes to improvement in employability that helps during interview for job.

2.  Alternate Options
  • A startup in manufacturing is not possible for the freshers, but training facilitates learning about working and bottlenecks and how one could accomodate, if job opportunity is there in MSME.

  • Training with MSME could as well be an INCUBATION for Entrepreneurship, if one could come out with an idea acceptable to the owner and starts working as Associate with the industry, that also adds to the growth of the unit.

  • Important point to take note in this association is the ETHICS that none of the industry secrets or confidential information is misused. It’s the trust that ultimately benefits more students to avail the facility, but remember, the industry should have tangible gain by associating students.

3.  Social Entrepreneurship
  • Profit is the primary objective of business, but if social concerns are attached to the objective, it becomes Social Entrepreneurship. Examples are establishing good schools, colleges, hospitals etc. In present day scenario, this could be promoting Road Safety that minimises fatal accidents, clean air and water supply system or any of the activities associated with the concept of Smart City that improves Quality of Life (QoL)

  • Opportunities are unlimited, but one should keep exploring and have a strong TEAM to enter the business. It's always better to start in group and not alone.
